Vonage is a phone provider offering both home and business plans. You might remember them for their light-hearted “People do stupid things” commercials in the early 2000s. Those commercials were for home phone plans, but the company has more recently shifted to highlighting their cloud technology and business phone plans. Although it isn’t VoIP per se (similar to Grasshopper), the functionality is virtually the same.

Why is MightyCall the best alternative to Vonage?
Vonage has been in the market a while and provides reliable service, but it can be quite costly if your business has multiple users. Their Premium plan is around $29.99 per user per month with unlimited minutes and texting. Their pricing plan is not entirely transparent, however, as you have to factor in the need to pay for phone numbers themselves and possibly renting hardware.
Despite the high prices, however, Vonage has been adding features over time to ensure customers get the most for their money. When combined with the company’s name recognition, you have a good representative for the VoIP industry.
Just a Single Number
With Vonage, you get 1 number and each additional extension requires the additional per-user charge. That’s not the worst part though—besides the general cost of the service, you will pay extra for toll-free and vanity numbers. MightyCall gives you two numbers, local, toll-free, or vanity, as inclusions in every plan to give businesses flexibility.
Unclear Pricing
You might go to Vonage’s pricing page and think the prices aren’t that bad, but that is because they haven’t told you the whole story. Firstly, taxes and fees are not included in the sticker price, so depending on your state you could be paying more than 5% extra on top of a bill that is likely already over $100.
The second disingenuous aspect of Vonage’s pricing is that many features and integrations cost extra per month. Looking on the feature and pricing page doesn’t hint at that reality, but it is true.

- the business inbox feature, meant to centralize communications, is an extra $10 a month
- call recording is another $5
- call groups are also an extra $5
- call queues are an extra $15 a month
- many of the most popular integrations also are an extra $5 a month
Considering taxes and fees are included in MightyCall’s sticker price and we have CRM capability without needing to charge almost $30 a user, that $20 per user is a clear price. All of this is before Vonage tries to push desk phones on you for additional monthly charges.
